Art aesthetics is the philosophy of art. It is understanding the "why" behind what we create and the decisions we make as artists. There are 4 major AESTHETIC STANCES in critiquing and learning about why art is created. Often critics align themselves with a strong belief in one of the following in order to define what is art and what isn't:
FORMALISM: Art is for its own sake. Following the Principles of Design is what is important.
INSTRUMENTALISM: Art has a function. It does something or lead to some social good.
EXPRESSIONISM: Art is about emotions. Feelings are what counts.
IMITATIONALISM: Art should be realistic. It should look like something (an actual portrayal).

Think about how you might fit into one of these stances. Post your thoughts and explain why you have chosen that particular stance.

Later we will begin posting images for you to defend.

  2. I do think that art should always have a message and some sort of emotion in it, but I definitely lean towards Imitationalism. I personally like realistic art because it's detailed and it's something that virtually everyone from every walk of life can relate to, or understand. When I look at art I just connect better with pieces from Caravaggio or Rembrant, as supposed to Rothko or Warhol.

  3. Expressionism because it transcends all boundaries. It is not limited to what you see like Imitationalism is. Human emotions are beautiful.
