i hope this is what we were supposed to do..
anyways i think that in this painting lawrence is showing that hell or touge times can be escaped and that you can reach a higher or better place he really shows this through his use of colors towards the bottom of the painting its very dark and there are even tombstones but as you look up through the painting there are many more colors and the overall feel is just happier.

agreed:) the layout of the picture draws the eye upward from the "graveyard" and then up the staircase, to the "happier" part of the picture which you said!
