Response to Jacob Lawrence...

In this painting, I believe that there is heavy symbolism pertaining to life after death. As he is climbing the staircase, it is evident that on the bottom of the stairs, it is dark, there are graves, and a feeling of sadness. As he climbs to the top however, there is more color, and all in all the upstaris is more inviting. This is pretty straight forward to me, there is heaven and hell and he is climbing away from death and into life. BAM!

...beat that Cho.

  1. i'm not sure it this is what im supposed to be responding to, but i think that in the painting lawrence is trying to explain that the sadness of death can be overcome by the belief that something better can be reached through it, like heaven. he stresses the simplicity of this notion through his simple figures/shapes. the color keeps it interesting because it "varries".

  2. Jake - I think there is a little more going on than just the idea of heaven and hell. Did you pay attention to the figures and what each may symbolize?
