i'm not sure it this is what im supposed to be responding to, but i think that in the painting lawrence is trying to explain that the sadness of death can be overcome by the belief that something better can be reached through it, like heaven. he stresses the simplicity of this notion through his simple figures/shapes. the color keeps it interesting because it "varies".
